SKILLS GAP AND DECKHAND SHORTAGE
The Maritime Transportation System (MTS) faces a crippling gap in attracting a new workforce.
Currently, there is a 50,000 gap in various roles in the MTS with projections of over 88,000 by 2030(1).
Deckhand specific gap is projected at 40 - 60% of this projection; equating to 35,200 - 52,800 new deckhands are needed to enter the workforce in the next decade.
1) Source: https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/water-transportation-occupations.htm (Sited July 16, 2024) Overall employment of water transportation workers is projected to grow 2 percent from 2022 to 2032, about as fast as the average for all occupations. About 8,800 openings for water transportation workers are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.
INDUSTRIAL MARITIME CHALLENGE
Turn Operation Issues into Margin Growth:
Build a Thriving Maritime Community:
"Blessey Marine Services is proud to team up with The Maritime Throwdown! This partnership is all about celebrating grit, skill, and the relentless drive of our maritime professionals. Together, we’re elevating the industry, pushing limits, and spotlighting the best in the business—on and off the water.
The competition not only improved the technical skills of my mariners but also significantly boosted our team cohesion and communication. Our Blessey Team feels more prepared and confident on the job, and it's all thanks to the engaging and challenging experience provided by the MTD course. We could not be more excited and thrilled with our very own Paul Casebonne’s accomplishment as the 2025 MTD Champion. ”
"Partnering with Maritime Throw Down is one of the many ways we have end-user access to our customers' crews. Walking in their shoes helps us to bring new solutions to market because we get real - world experience feedback."
"As the Senior Director of Safety and Sustainability for the American Waterways Operators and a long time supporter of Maritime Throwdown, I know the value and difficulty of building engaging systems that promote safety and operational efficiency. MTD is a tremendous asset to our industry because it enhances safety through hands-on activities with our most valuable resource-the men and women working on our vessels. The skills they demonstrate in competition directly translate to real-world proficiency, and the dedication of Captain Kenny Brown in advancing the MTD organization adds immense value to our industry's future."
"Nothing brings a bigger smile to me than presenting the Finalist Champion this award. The men and women deck hands on Tug and Barges or Commercial Passenger Vessels perform an incredibly important role in our Maritime Transportation System. The Industrial Maritime Challenge continues to touch more communities, attract more new workers and positively shine a light on our livelihood"
